Because I love you

Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember my mum has always been a mark maker.

Some of my earliest memories are of skipping school and going along with her to sculpture and printmaking classes and participating in my own small way, with tiny lumps of clay or contributing a small corner of an etching.

The tension that was always there, the clash between the life of a young family and the life of an artist, perhaps is clearer and more apparent now that I have a young family of my own and experience this push and pull from the other side.

The works in this exhibition are, to me, about the act of art making as an act of love. The time taken to draw, to record, to map the lines of those we care for deeply into paper and the act of observing and seeing someone while making those lines is something that carries emotional weight  and care, especially in this era where we all have image creation instantly at our fingertips.
