Artist Statement

This is an abstracted artwork handcrafted with the textile technique used in Korean bojagi, a protest banner, and a declaration in support of universal human rights. We are living in a time when genocidal actions are bringing anger, heaviness, and immeasurable grief. Government and institutions are censoring artists and activists, and tyranny is spreading. I have aimed to make a work of lightness, luminosity through transparency, and formal beauty. Flags and banners waved at protest marches and rallies bring colour and movement to sombre gatherings, as well as providing an identity under which to gather. This artwork, hand-made with ultralight fabrics normally used for tents, sleeping bags, and outdoor apparel, combines this public role of flags with the slow, domestic, female-identified labour of patchwork sewing. It can be both viewed for its aesthetic qualities of formal geometric abstraction and read as an urgent universal rallying cry.
