Artist Statement

The multi-element work explores some of the ways the visual arts is used to fabricate lies and false narratives as part of warmongering and ongoing war. Moving image elements trace historical roots when the term yellow journalism was coined that described William Randolph Hearst’s poaching of a cartoonist from a rival New York newspaper and his announcement: “You furnish the pictures, I’ll provide the war!” Intercut within this trajectory is found footage from the movie Citizen Kane by Orson Welles and the Israeli artists visiting New York who were creating media content for the 9/11 events. Katoomba-based artist Matt Downey performs in this work.

In contrast to the stories circulating widely as yellow journalism or fake news as part of the Palestinian genocide, Australian complicity is depicted in elements added to a section of the Bayeux tapestry, the first English genocide.

We warmly invite you to visit the exhibition when you're in town or join us for the Closing Event. Entry is free. Light refreshments will be served.
